Unleash Your Pickleball Game

Pickleball, a sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has seen a surge in popularity across the United States, and Austin, Texas, is no exception. With a variety of venues and events catering to this fast-growing sport, Austin has become a hotspot for both novice and experienced pickleball players.

Common Injuries in Pickleball and How to Avoid Them

While pickleball is generally a low-impact sport, players, especially professionals, are not immune to injuries. Here are some common injuries and tips on how to avoid them:

1. Shoulder Impingement

  • Prevention: Strengthening the rotator cuff muscles and improving flexibility in the shoulder can help prevent impingement. Ensure proper technique, especially during overhead shots.
  • Treatment: Rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medications can help alleviate pain. Physical therapy may be recommended for more severe cases.

2. Anterior Knee Pain

  • Prevention: Strengthening the muscles around the knee, particularly the quadriceps, can provide better support. Wearing proper footwear and avoiding overuse are also key.
  • Treatment: Rest, ice, and elevation can help manage pain and swelling. Physical therapy exercises focusing on knee stability and strength are often beneficial.

3. Stress Fracture

  • Prevention: Gradually increasing activity levels and incorporating rest days into your training can help prevent stress fractures. Ensure you are using proper equipment and playing on suitable surfaces.
  • Treatment: Rest is crucial for healing stress fractures. Depending on the severity, a brace or cast may be required. Physical therapy can aid in recovery and help prevent future injuries.

4. Eye Injury

  • Prevention: Wearing protective eyewear can significantly reduce the risk of eye injuries.
  • Treatment: Seek immediate medical attention for any eye injuries. Rest and avoiding bright lights can aid in recovery.

Pickleball in Austin: Venues and Events

Austin boasts a variety of pickleball venues, including dedicated courts at the Austin Tennis and Pickleball Center at Walnut Creek Sports Park, as well as multiple outdoor and indoor courts across the city. The city also hosts various pickleball events and tournaments, providing ample opportunities for players to compete and connect with the local pickleball community.

Training Tips for Pickleball Players

  1. Focus on Core Strength: A strong core enhances stability and can improve your balance and shot accuracy.
  2. Improve Flexibility: Regular stretching can increase your range of motion and reduce the risk of injuries.
  3. Practice Footwork: Good footwork is essential in pickleball. Drills that improve agility and balance can enhance your performance on the court.
  4. Work on Your Serve: A consistent and accurate serve can give you an edge in the game. Spend time practicing your serve to make it a reliable part of your play.
  5. Play Smart: Understand your limits and listen to your body. If you start to feel fatigued or notice any pain, take a break.

  • I've been seeing Dr. Pyron since the beginning of the pandemic, and she's done a great job paying attention to what I need and helping to find solutions to the problems I've been having without blaming them all indiscriminately on weight. The office design is clearly HAES-informed, with comfortable seating for people of all sizes and blind weigh-ins. The team is also very friendly & helpful, particularly with managing insurance and scheduling issues.

  • I have been seeing Dr Pyron for many, many years as a primary care physician and as a Sports Medicine/Orthopedic Dr. She has always had a great staff and a great Physical Therapy team. I feel like a got the perfect all-in-one doctor. She has been there when I hurt my shoulder, broke my knee, and even had bronchitis. She has even been there after hours when she knew it was very important to inform you of something or get you the medicine you need. She also does virtual Dr visits,pt, and one on one training

I am baffled by the negative reviews. Dr. Pyron literally saved my life on several occasions. She is one of those rare doctors who look at the big picture and do not just try to treat symptoms. She works hard to get to the root cause of the issues. Just to give you an example: on one occasion Dr. Pyron ordered me to have a bone density scan. The scan from the provider came back in the middle of the normal range. However, Dr. Pyron pointed out that since I have been a daily runner for a while, my numbers should be much higher. This is the kind of critical thinking that is missing from most providers. Last year when I saw her with a knee pain, she found that my left leg was swollen and ordered me to get an ultrasound immediately. It turned out to be a blood clot that we managed to treat successfully since. Should I say that just a few weeks before that visit I had a visit with my regular primary care physician who did not notice a thing? I have also taken physical therapy sessions at this location - these sessions (while painful) got me back into running. I would never give up on this practice! Dr. Pyron has been treating not just me, but my family as well. She is the best you can hope for!
